Frequently Asked Questions
Bleeding gums are a common symptom of periodontal disease, an infection that affects the gums and supporting structures that hold your teeth in place. The most common cause of gum disease is poor brushing and flossing habits that lead to a buildup of bacteria-filled plaque and tartar on the teeth.
Prompt treatment for gum disease with Dr. Gaona can prevent the effects of gum disease—swollen, inflamed, and bleeding gums, loose teeth, and even tooth loss—from damaging your long-term oral health.
How We Treat Gum Disease
There are different types of periodontal disease treatment depending on how severe the case is. The first stage, called gingivitis, is typically easy to treat by a skilled dental hygienist.
Treatment for gingivitis involves a thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. Tartar is hardened plaque that you can’t brush away at home; it can only be removed by a trained hygienist using specialized instruments. This cleaning, along with improved at-home oral hygiene, is usually all it takes to reverse gingivitis.
If gingivitis advances, you can develop periodontitis. This is advanced gum disease and requires a special type of deep teeth cleaning called scaling and root planing. With this procedure, the hygienist ‘scales’ the teeth to remove plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, then ‘planes’ the roots to smooth rough surfaces.
Following the deep cleaning, it will be necessary to schedule more frequent teeth cleanings so your dentist and hygienist can prevent a reoccurrence.

Digital X-Rays
Dental x-rays are essential because they let our dentist look inside your teeth to detect problems that aren’t visible during a routine examination. We use digital x-rays at Cambridge Dental because they provide highly detailed images and, more importantly, protect you by emitting about 80 percent less radiation than traditional film x-rays.
Using digital x-rays, also referred to as radiographs, Dr. Gaona quickly and accurately diagnoses cavities, gum disease, and bone loss. Digital x-rays show hidden dental structures like wisdom teeth and the inside of your tooth called the pulp chamber where dental abscesses and root canal infections form.
We also use your digital x-rays as an educational tool to help keep you informed about your oral health needs. When Dr. displays your x-ray images on your chairside monitor, he can point out the problem area and explain how it’s affecting your oral health and why he recommends treatment.
Digital x-rays are always available at the click of a button, and we can easily share them with specialists and insurance providers as needed.
